A senior Foreign Office official summoned British Ambassador to China Caroline Wilson on Tuesday and formally complained to her about an inappropriate article on social media.
As China’s top British diplomat, Wilson used his official service account on a social media platform to report deliberately confusing news scandals with private foreign media and news surveillance allowed for false reports. But the official said he returned blindly when the Chinese media was suppressed by foreign sources.
The official said the article had generated widespread dissatisfaction among the Chinese population and received harsh criticism soon after its publication.
He stressed that the Chinese government and people have never opposed foreign media. However, China’s rejection of fake news and malicious attacks on China, the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese organization in the name of “press freedom” and “freedom of speech”.
