Glendale Outdoor Leadership School Now Offering Programs

(Published Oct 8, 2007)

GLENDALE, SC - The Palmetto Conservation Foundation's new program, Glendale Outdoor Leadership School (GOLS), is now open to the public for select programs and services. GOLS began offering some programs and services on October 2, including after-school youth programs and adult seminars.

GOLS is dedicated to making active lifestyles an integral part of the daily lives of South Carolina youth.  By teaching children how to take part in outdoor recreation, we introduce them to new and exciting personal growth possibilities and instill in them new connections with Mother Earth.  We introduce young folks to a wide variety of outdoor activities that teach the importance of collaboration with others, leadership, and self-responsibility. GOLS  helps youth understand the importance of "healthy living" and being good stewards of the environment around them.

Kids in the Woods
The objective of Kids in the Woods is to teach children how to participate in outdoor recreational activities with hands-on lessons followed by opportunities to try using their new skills.  This two-hour, after-school course runs one day a week for six weeks.  Youth will be introduced to a variety of outdoor sports and pursuits that will vary according to the seasons, including kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, fishing, and rope course navigation. Kids in the Woods is a great way for kids to try their hands at something new, while still staying active and moving their bodies.

Session 1

Ages: 12 and older

Dates: Tuesdays, October 2 thru November 6

Time: 3:45 - 5:30

Cost: $75 (6-week session)

Discovery 1-2-3

Discovery 1-2-3 is a way to include younger children in opportunities to explore the great outdoors.  We want to teach grade school-aged children the importance of getting in touch with nature.  This program will introduce boys and girls at a young age to birds, dirt, bugs and more, and show them how fun it is getting their hands dirty. The kids get to discover the world around them through nature hiking and observation, bug and soil examination, and water and shoreline exploration.  The children will take home a project after each class that corresponds to the adventure of the day. This two-hour, after-school course runs one day a week for five weeks. It is fascinating to see the excitement in young children’s eyes when they discover something new.  Watch them blossom as they discover just how wonderful this earth is.

Session 1
Ages: 7 and older
