ANDERSON, SC - Twenty-eight local sailboat owners have registered their boats and crews, mostly family, to sail in the annual New Year's Day Regatta on Hartwell Lake on January 1 at Western Carolina Sailing Club (WCSC).

Boat owners include Travis Fortson, aka "The Good Samaritan," who on July 9, 2007, stopped along I-85 to assist a motorist in distress and was hit by a tractor-trailer truck, according to Ed Sherman of WCSC. The accident severed Travis' right leg at the hip. Sailing is his recreational passion and this will be his first sail during recovery, Sherman said.

Hot chili and sandwiches will be served at 11:30 a.m. On-the-water sailing starts at 1:30 p.m. Weather predictions call for sunny skies with temps in the 50's and winds 10 tp 15 knots, which is perfect sailing weather, Sherman said.
