ANDERSON, SC - The southeastern United States offers competitive sailing for men, women and children. Most regattas are designed for the men and their crews. However, Western Carolina Sailing Club (WCSC) on Hartwell Lake, between Charlotte and Atlanta has a different point of view. On Saturday, September 8, WCSC is hosting an all-day sailing event for women.
The clubhouse will hold a Mary Kay Party, a Southern Living at home party, wine tasting, and other beverages, hors d'oeuvres, fresh flowers, delicious food, women's shoes and apparel, topped off with a sailboat race on the lake with women at the helm of keelboats, which could turn into a sailing fashion show. Men can be aboard but if a man takes the helm the boat will be disqualified.
Prizes will be gift certificates to malls and women's topsider boat shoes. Diva Day proceeds will go to breast cancer research. The notice of race will soon be posted on the WCSC website. The official racing rules of sailing will be in effect using PHRF handicaps.
