The success of this year’s Hartwell Lake Clean-up Campaign was because of the involvement of over 600 volunteers and over 100 organizations participating during the five-week clean-up period that began on August 19 and ended on September 30, 2006. Tons of debris were removed from the lake. This was the 26th year ofthe cleanup that is managed and coordinated by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers – Hartwell Project. Ranger Tanya Grant was primarily responsible for the effort and did an outstanding job.
The Volunteer Appreciation Day Picnic for the participants is co-sponsored by the Lake Hartwell Association and is our way of saying “Thank You” to all those who helped. This year’s picnic was held at Big Oaks Recreation Area on Saturday, September 24. Hundreds of volunteers enjoyed live entertainment, good food and door prizes galore. In addition to a catered barbeque dinner from Sonny’s in Anderson, hot dogs were also available. There were lots of activities for the children who helped clean the shoreline and great music by the Guthrie Family Blue Grass Band.
A special thanks to the staff of the Hartwell Project Office Corps of Engineers and the Optimist Club of Hartwell as well as many of the Lake Hartwell members who helped coordinate the day. A list of the dozens of other businesses and organizations that contributed to the Appreciation Day is attached. We ask that you support these businesses when you have a choice.
