Mountain Heritage Supper 4/4/2009 6:00 pm Oconee State Park

(Published Mar 24, 2009)

Announcing the plans of the Southern Appalachian Farmstead in Oconee County will be the program for the upcoming Mountain Heritage Supper. The Oconee Heritage Center will be hosting this fundraiser at the Oconee State Park on April 4th beginning at 6:00 pm.

An application is currently in the final stages for a “Special Use Permit” from the USDA Forest Service for the use of the historic Russell Farmstead. If the application is accepted, work towards construction of the farm could begin as early as fall of 2009.

As will be presented for the first time to the public on April 4th, the plans include the preservation of the remaining buildings of the Russell Farm in addition to the establishment of a separate farmstead using the buildings collection of the Oconee Heritage Center. At the supper, supporters will be able to see a site plan detailing where structures are proposed along with an overall proposal for parking, footpaths and tenant quarters.

The Oconee Heritage Center has been collecting historic structures for several years including the dogtrot log cabin from Buzzard Hollow, KY a one-room cabin from Gum Log, GA, smokehouses, a blacksmith shop and several others. The time period that will be interpreted will be between the years of 1875 and 1925. The vision for the Southern Appalachian Farmstead is to create a living-history farmstead, or a working-farm museum, at which visitors will be able to experience life on a traditional mountain farm at the turn of the twentieth century.

The menu for the Mountain Heritage Supper consists of Lemon-Pepper Trout, Triple Succotash, Spiced Carrots, Cornbread, Ginger Bread, Sweet Potato Pie and Tea or Water. The evening will also include local music followed by the announcement of the site plan. Tickets are $40 per person. For reservation information, please email info@oconeeheritagecenter.org or call 864.638.2224. The deadline for reservations is March 21st.

I AM ONE OF TWO GRANDSONS OF MATTIE AND OTTO RUSSELL WHO OWNED THE RUSSELL FARMSTEAD UP UNTIL MRS RUSSELL SOLD IT TO THE GOVERNMENT. RUSSELL BAKER WAS MY BROTHER, HE PASSED AWAY 5 YEARS AGO. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS KNOWN THAT HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING THE FARM PUT ON THE NATIONAL HISTORIC REGISTOR. HE SPENT MANY HOURS AND MONEY GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF GETTING IT PUT ON THE NATIONAL HISTORIC REGISTOR. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HIS NAME MENTIONED IN SOME WAY FOR WHAT HE DID! HE SPENT MANY SUMMERS STAYING WITH OUR GRAND PARENTS IN THE SUMMER AND CHRISTMAS TIME. THERE IS NO WAY I CAN TELL YOU HOW MUCH HE LOVED THAT PLACE. I GAVE ALL THE FILES AND INFORMATION HE HAD TO THE CLEMSON PROFESSOR A FEW MONTHS AGO. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WILLIAM BAKER
