COE areas open for hunting season

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office announced some of its larger recreation areas on Hartwell Lake will open for archery hunters and small game hunting for the 2009-2010 Georgia and South Carolina states hunting season.

These areas include: 
Anderson Co., S.C.
S.C. River (125 acres)
Glenn Ferry Park (211 acres)
Weldon Island Park (138 acres);

Oconee Co., S.C
Choestoea Park (369 acres);

Hart Co., Ga
Paynes Creek Park (399 acres)
Hartwell Dam Quarry Area (410 acres).

     Hunters must have a permit for the Hartwell Dam Quarry and S.C. River Area only, which is available at no charge from the Corps’ Hartwell Lake Project Office. Deer and turkey hunters must use archery equipment; firearms are prohibited. All hunting regulations, license requirements and seasons set by the Georgia and South Carolina Departments of Natural Resources (DNR) will apply. More information on the states’ hunting regulations can be found at: www.dnr.sc.gov (for S.C.) and www.ga.dnr.org (for Ga.).
      Small game hunting is allowed at the Hartwell Dam Quarry Area and the S.C. River Hunting Area, only after deer or turkey hunting season closes. Hunting for small game (after deer and turkey hunting season closes) is restricted to shotgun only with number four shot or smaller. 
      Hunting for small game is prohibited in Glenn Ferry Park, Choestoea Park, Paynes Creek Park and Weldon Island Park. Deer and turkey hunting is restricted to archery equipment only with firearms strictly prohibited. 
     The recreation areas will be open on a walk-in or boat-in basis. No motorized vehicles will be allowed within the gated areas.  Only portable stands/blinds are allowed and must be removed from public land after the season ends. 
Dove hunting is allowed in designated fields at the Hartwell Dam Quarry Hunting Area on Saturday and Wednesday only throughout the season, set by the Georgia DNR. 
      The remaining public lands and water around Hartwell Lake are open to hunting in accordance with Title 36, U.S. Code of Federal Regulations and state hunting regulations. For more information and links to hunting maps on Hartwell Lake, visithttp://www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/hartwell/hunting.htm .
      The islands in Hartwell Lake are open for hunting in accordance with state hunting regulations and seasons. In the interest of safety while hunting on the islands, big game hunters are encouraged to use archery equipment only.
