10,000th dove banded by DNR

Since 2003, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources Wildlife Section and other partners have taken part in a long-term, multi-state banding study of mourning doves to improve information on dove life history. The S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recently banded our 10,000th dove on July 6 at Crackerneck Wildlife Management Area in Aiken County. As of mid-August that number was up to 11,400.

Upstate mobility impaired deer hunts set for this fall

Mobility impaired hunters will again be treated to a unique opportunity to attend two special deer hunts this year on about 50 well-managed and exclusive, private tracts of land in the Upstate.

Deer season forecast good for 2009

The much-anticipated start of the 2009 deer season is just around the corner and South Carolina’s deer population is healthy and the season outlook is good. Although the deer harvest has been on a downward trend the last few years indicating that population levels have moderated, hunter success and deer harvest rates remain good, according to Charles Ruth, DNR’s Deer/Turkey Project supervisor.

COE primitive weapon deer hunts

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ J. Strom Thurmond Project Office will conduct primitive weapon deer hunts in Bussey Point, located in Lincoln Co., Ga., in order to maintain the deer population within the carrying capacity for the area and to improve the quality of the herd. The 2,545-acre peninsula will be open for scheduled hunts on these dates:

Clemson youth deer hunt registration ends Sept. 1

The Fant's Grove Youth Deer Hunt is set for Saturday, Oct. 3 at Fant's Grove Wildlife Management Area near Clemson. A public drawing for the 22 slots on the deer hunt will be held at noon Tuesday, Sept. 8 at the Clemson office of the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) at 311 Natural Resources Drive near Clemson University. All interested applicants are welcome to attend the drawing.

COE areas open for hunting season

Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office announced some of its larger recreation areas on Hartwell Lake will open for archery hunters and small game hunting for the 2009-2010 Georgia and South Carolina states hunting season.

Wild turkey reproduction only slightly better this summer

Based on a S.C. Department of Natural Resources survey, reproduction by wild turkeys increased only slightly over 2007 which was the poorest year on record, according to a state wildlife biologist.
