New Mountain biking trail at Paynes Creek Campground

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hartwell Lake Office and the International Biking Association/Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association have received $25,000 to build a multipurpose trail in the campground area, according to a statement.

Mountain bikers, hikers and other users will soon have a new trail at the Paynes Creek Campground area on Hartwell Lake, thanks to a program that provides seed money to projects.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Hartwell Lake Office and the International Biking Association/Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association have received $25,000 to build a multipurpose trail in the campground area, according to a statement.

The biking associations will match the seed award, known as the Challenge Partnership Handshake Award, with $20,000.

Construction will start soon, and the trail is not expected to affect regular use of Paynes Creek Campground Area, according to a Corps statement.

The campground is on the Tugaloo River arm of Hartwell Lake in Hart County, Ga. Paynes Creek offers a total of 44 camp sites with water and electric hookups. Thirty-seven of those sites are in waterfront locations.

“The Challenge Partnership Handshake is a way for the Corps to leverage its budget by sharing costs and to execute recreation programs that may not be possible otherwise,” said Virgil Hobbs, Hartwell Project Manager, at the Corps Hartwell Lake Office, in a statement.

The program allows the Corps to accept money, materials and volunteer services — following the approval of a partnership agreement — to accomplish work programs, Hobbs said.
