Shaw Island Burning

(Published Jun 23, 2007)

Underbrush on Lake Hartwell's Shaw Island, across from Double Springs boat ramp, is burning but not threatening large trees, according to reports. The 325-acre island is located in South Carolina and has no facilities. The fire is on the Georgia side of the island and has been burning for several days.

The cause of the fire is unknown. Camping is not allowed on Shaw Island, according to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineer brochure. Camping is permitted in established campgrounds and on islands (with the exception of Shaw Island, which is posted No Camping). When Island camping please follow the following guidelines:

  • Dispose of waste properly
  • Minimize campfire impacts
  • Be considerate of other visitors
  • Respect wildlife

When camping in an established campground, the Corps advises: For your campfires, please use only dead wood gathered from the ground. Contain your fire in designated fire rings or grills only. Never leave your fire unattended and extinguish all fires before checkout.
