ANDERSON, SC - Underbrush on Lake Hartwell's Shaw Island appeared to be burning out Monday evening as thunderstorms drenched the area. A few flames could be seen along the shoreline from Double Springs boat ramp, and smoke hovered in the coves, but the island was no longer engulfed in smoke as it was this weekend.
On Saturday and Sunday, swimmers and boaters used the boat ramp despite the lingering smoke. The 325-acre island began burning mid-week last week. The cause is unknown. If a campfire was the cause, campers should know that camping is not allowed on Shaw Island, according to a U.S. Army Corps of Engineer brochure. Camping is permitted in established campgrounds and on islands (with the exception of Shaw Island, which is posted No Camping). When Island camping please follow the following guidelines:
When camping in an established campground, the Corps advises: For your campfires, please use only dead wood gathered from the ground. Contain your fire in designated fire rings or grills only. Never leave your fire unattended and extinguish all fires before checkout.
