PICKENS, SC – Clemson’s Youth Learning Institute (YLI) has adde a wilderness adventure camp to its 2008 line-up of summer programs for those aged 8 to 16. The new Adventure Summer Camp joins the YLI's Camp Voyager, Camp Sewee, Camp Wildlife and 4-H Summer Camp. Register by March 15 and save $25.
Adventure Camp offers those ages 12 to 15 three programs — coed, girls only and coed mini-trips — with 10 days of outdoor wilderness excursions. No experience is necessary, but activities are best suited for physically active youngsers committed to spending time away from home in a wilderness setting.
Primary activities are backpacking, canoeing and mountain biking. Such activities help young people gain a sense of responsibility, self-confidence and the value of teamwork. Educational workshops include wilderness safety and survival skills, proper equipment use and maintenance for each activity, and the American Canoe Association’s nationally recognized standards for canoeing techniques.
Jorge Calzadilla, YLI executive director, believes that “inspiring kids to stay connected with nature is critical to our children and our future.”
Brett Deming, YLI director of Adventure Programming agrees. “Kids in this program will not only have a great adventure, but they will also learn the skills they need to continue to pursue outdoor activities and enjoy our state’s natural beauty.”
Located at Pinnacle Falls in the beautiful Eastatoe Valley, the 100-acre camp in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Pickens County features a trout stream, 60-foot waterfall, fish pond, teepees, game field and hiking trails, with nearby access to the 76-mile Foothills Trail and Lake Jocassee.
Adventure Summer Camp is made possible through a partnership with The Cliffs Communities, a property developer with a philosophy of wellness, service and respect for nature, and a commitment to promoting the health and well-being of young people.
