Palmetto Sportsmen's ClassicThe
23rd Annual Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic will be held at the State Fairgrounds in Columbia March 23-25. Doors will be open from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, March 23; from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 24; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 25.
New and returning major attractions for 2007 are “Twiggy—The Water Skiing Squirrel,” “The SwampMaster” Alligator Show, Okefenokee Joe, Roark Ferguson and Joe Kelly’s display of North American Wildlife Collection and Southern Whitetail Collection. Also in 2007, the Palmetto Sportsmen’s Classic will feature its second archery contest where participants may bring their own bow and arrows and compete in an archery contest sponsored by the Palmetto Archery Federation and the Lake Marion Archery Club.

WCSC Elects New OfficersThe
Western Carolina Sailing Club has elected a new commodore and officers for 2007. Steve Kiemele of Hartwell, GA, has been elected commodore. John Kreidler of Simpsonville, SC was elected vice commodore and Dan Marett of Anderson, SC, rear commodore. Board of stewards include WCSC members all from South Carolina: Jim Snowden, of Clemson, treasurer; Kerry Steck of Greer, secretary; Brent Freese of Mauldin; Travis Fortson of Greenville; Charlie Lord of Greenville; Tommy Craft of Anderson; Rob Eades of Easley and Dr. Alan Hippensteal of Greenville.

Portsmouth Race Week(End)The Western Carolina Sailing Club will hold the
2007 Portsmouth Race Week(End) on Lake Hartwell, March 31-April 1, 2007, at the club's location at 5200 Westwind Way Anderson. Pre-registration deadline is Wednesday, March 21, and the entry fee is $35. The regatta is open to any Center Board Portsmouth Boat. Any One Design fleet bringing 5 or more boats will have their own start and be scored separately. Entrants must complete registration with Western Carolina Sailing Club (WCSC), the organizing authority to be eligible to compete. Rowing DockThe Corps of Engineers has approved a permit for the rowing dock at City of Anderson-owned Darwin Wright Park on Lake Hartwell. The dock could be installed by late summer if grants the City of Anderson Recreation Department is seeking are approved. The CVB will market the dock to colleges in the Northeast and Midwest for spring training. Each rowing team that trains at the dock would generate $30,000 in economic impact for Anderson County, according to the Anderson County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Corps Bans Tube Kiting on Lake HartwellThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has banned the use of tube kites on the three lakes under its jurisdiction in Georgia and South Carolina. Tube kites are immediately prohibited on Lakes Hartwell, J. Strom Thurmond and Richard B. Russell under authority of U.S. Code, Title 36, Chapter III, Part 327, Section 327.12(a) Restrictions.
