So far this year in Georgia, there have been 58 boating incidents resulting in 40 injuries and 5 boating incident-related fatalities. Additionally, there have been 21 drownings on public waters. Conservation Rangers have issued 69 boating under the influence (BUI) citations statewide.

Last year, there were 156 boating incidents and 18 boating-incident related fatalities, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Incidents can happen quickly and the chance of one occurring greatly increases if boat operators are either unfamiliar with or fail to follow the existing boating laws, or “rules of the road,” that govern lakes and rivers.

2009 Spring Board Regatta

The Western Carolina Sailing Club on Lake Hartwell launches the season April 4-5 with one of its usual family-friendly events - the 2009 Spring Board Regatta. As usual, WCSC has kept their prices to a low $40 including a Sunday breakfast and awards lunch with lakeside camping available on the club grounds. Bag lunch and dinners are available for an extra $10. Expected one-design fleets include Lightnings, Flying Scots, Buccaneer 18s and MC Scows. Visit wcsc-sailing.org for details.

Kayaking on Keowee River above Lake Hartwell

We went to the Keowee River that feeds into Lake Hartwell. This is about 20-25 minutes from our home in Piedmont, SC. Near the Seneca/Clemson area. We put in at Lawrence Bridge ramp (which was actually closed for boats) (and difficult for kayaks!).We put in at about 2:30 in the afternoon and were tying the kayak back up at about 8:00pm...a long but awesome day!
