Newsy Notes from Westminster

(Published Mar 26, 2007)

I am saddened to hear that there is a real possibility of a power increase in Westminster. I do so pray that the city fathers will find a way for that not to happen. My husband and I researched the power rates in America and found that we, right here in Westminster, already pay the highest power rates of any where in the nation. We must get out from under PMPA! Help, City Council!!!!!

Happy birthday wishes are sent to Jay Lee, Mae Bridwell, Layton Mainous, Ausley Carraway, Debbie Goulding, Martin Gjelsvik, Hunter Hackett, Marilyn Mickelson, Terry Herring, Jill Freeman Lee, Jay Lee, Susan Morgan, Ernestine Addis, and Burl Carraway.

On March 8, Bill and Carol Strickland met Marvin and Erith Cobb of Taylors at Olive Garden in Greenville for lunch together.

A surprise birthday celebration was held Saturday at McGee’s in Anderson for Susan Morgan…Attending the very Irish event in honor of her April First birthday were Jennifer D. Adams, Lorraine Harding, Marilyn Mickelson (Lorraine’s sister from Washington D. C who was actually the birthday girl of St. Patrick’s Day), Kaytlin Cape, and Rolann Lee. Jennifer and Rolann visited with Susan Morgan and her granddaughter Kaytlin in Pendleton after the event for coffee and dessert.

Kim Reed from Pennsylvania visited for two weeks with her parents Mason and Brenda Lay and her brother Jeff Lay and his family in Oconee. Kim with her parents spent several days in Gatlinburg Tennessee this week.

I met Noah Lay Monday afternoon. He is precious and looks so much like his mother Sherry. I had not seen him since he was a baby. He was helping his daddy spread mulch in our yard waiting for him mom to pick him up. Thanks, Noah.

I have heard so many wonderful things about the GALA for the Depot planned by Jane Suttles and catered by Kay Owens.

Adjectives such as “wonderful, delicious, spectacular, very much fun, refreshing’ have been shared.

I am so sorry I was not able to attend, but I understand over one hundred did. From city council, our mayor Derek Hodgin and his wife were there in full support of the fundraiser that did quite well.

Ernestine Addis was guest of honor on Monday for her birthday at Copper River in Seneca. Joining the hostesses, Frances Robinson from Lawrenceville Georgia, Ruth Brown, Ruth Osborne, and Rolann Lee, were Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Sandifer and their daughter Rosalyn from Germany who stopped by the table and joined in the singing of ‘Happy Birthday” to Ernestine.

Congratulations to 2006 West-Oak honor graduate and now USC freshman Brooke Brock, daughter of Stanley and Debbie Brock who was named to The Presidents List recently. We are so proud of you Brooke.

Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Brock with daughter Brooke and her friend Allison Rhodes spent several days in Gatlinburg last week.

Billie Stancil was hostess for The Westminster Garden club last week. I really enjoy the fellowship of the group. Would love to have visitors at any meeting.

I had a nice chat with Shorty Smith on Monday. He suffers from leg pain all of the time. Our good wishes go to him.

Peggy Morgan has answered a call to be the musician at Reedy Fork Baptist Church in Seneca. Her first Sunday to play for that congregation was March 18th. I really will miss Peggy and her husband Clark at my church. Many of my Cleveland cousins attended Reedy Fork through the years and Peggy told me that she was told that first Sunday that memorials from my cousin Daisy Dean Cleveland and her family members were responsible for the music system in the church.

Mr. Ray Brock enjoys boarding the Southern Crescent in Toccoa and traveling to visit with his late wife’s family in Selma Alabama on occasion.

Stanley Brock told me that the Festival of the Nations would begin the last day of March and go for two month at DollyWood in Pigeon Forge Tennessee. He highly recommends it for all ages.

I enjoyed meeting Kathy and Steve Parrish recently. They moved here out on the lake and told me they like our area. Welcome! We are happy to have you.

I happened to see Elaine Sheriff Turner and her family in Anderson on Saturday. I have such fond memories of her when she was a lifeguard at the Westminster Swimming Pool with me.

I stopped by the Tribble Center Gift and Thrift Shop in Bountyland Road in Seneca for the first time on Friday afternoon. They opened in November. Found it to be a very good place to shop. Everyone was so friendly. I will go back. Open Monday –Friday 10:00 A M to 6:00 P M and on Saturday from 10:00 A M to 4:00 in the afternoon.

I also went over to Habitat for Humanity Thrift Shop. They have EVERYTHING you can imagine!
