WALHALLA, SC - Dr. Katrina Greene, a developmental psychologist from Walhalla,SC, has joined the staff of the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee (EOC). A trained researcher, Greene has over ten years of experience developing, implementing, and directing research in the areas of child development, education, childcare, family and community development, family functioning, parenting, cultural issues, economically and educationally disadvantaged youth, and service delivery.

Prior to her joining the EOC, she was a Senior Research Associate for AMSAQ, Inc., a Rockville, Maryland firm that works primarily with government agencies. In that capacity, Greene worked with one client to analyze the relations between patient perception of quality healthcare and institutional performance ratings. She also served as the project director for an evaluation of cultural competence in behavioral healthcare education and training that was funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

From 1996 to 2005, Greene was an Assistant Professor of Human Development at Cornell University in New York. While at Cornell, she led a three-year research project that examined the socialization practices of African American parents, and the effects of their practices on the social and cognitive development of their preschool and elementary school-aged children. Greene also directed a study to evaluate an intensive test-taking program that was implemented in 2nd and 3rd grades in the New York City public school system to determine the effectiveness of the program on children's standardized test scores. She worked closely with educators, social service agencies, mental health counselors, and parents in her research work.

Greene received her B.S. in Biology from Winthrop University and earned her Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy in Developmental Psychology from the University of Virginia. She is the recipient of numerous grants, fellowships, and academic honors.

"I am excited to join the staff of the EOC and continue working on educational issues and factors that affect child development and family functioning – which have been at the very heart of my research career," Greene said.

The SC Education Oversight Committee is an independent, non-partisan group made up of 18 educators, business persons, and elected leaders. Created in 1998, the committee is dedicated to reporting facts, measuring change, and promoting progress within South Carolina’s education system.
