Island Fire Caused by Campfire

(Published Jun 27, 2007)

ANDERSON, SC - Rain doesn't keep these men from doing their jobs and it seems a little smoke doesn't either.

A fire caused by an uncontained campfire is its cause.  The blaze ignited last Thursday and has spread over 90% of the 325 acres on Lake Hartwell's Shaw Island...causing hazy conditions for almost a week.

Even though you can still see ash that's blowing in from Shaw Island, workers here building a dock say the smoky conditions have gotten a lot better in the last couple of days.  Before, they say it was hard to see because of the fire burning nearby.

But now that fire is getting a little help from nature and the Army Corps of Engineers.  Winds are blowing the fire towards the lakeshore and the Corps gave the fire a little ignition to speed up its natural course.

“But it is in a situation where it's not going to escalate into a major fire,” Ian Jones explains.

Even though the current drought may have helped the fire spread, forester Ian Jones says it didn't make a big difference in the fire's magnitude.

“It's highly possible that it could spread like it did but it would've been better on the trees' ability to recover from this,” Jones tells NewsChannel 32.

And to keep this from happening again during this dry spell Jones says that even though foot traffic is welcome on all the islands, campers and boaters should only build campfires on approved campgrounds

“So that would be the thing if you fish on an island, use a lantern don't use a campfire,” he says.

And during the next week or two, the Corps wants Lake goers to steer clear of the hazy areas while the fire completely burns out.

Right now the flames only present a danger to the dogwoods and oaks.

The district forester also says this burn could cause a pine beetle problem later this year.
