The Currahee Club filed a voluntary petition for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, otherwise known as a reorganization bankruptcy, on Sunday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court Northern District of Georgia. The community next will begin a process of following a bankruptcy plan.
According to Dene Hicks, Stephens County tax commissioner, Currahee Partners LLC owes $700,000 of back taxes and was facing a tax sale Tuesday on the courthouse steps. The bankruptcy filing keeps such a sale from happening.
According to Bob Whitley, owner/developer of the Currahee Club: Nothing should change for property owners in the Currahee Club community. All the amenities and services owners currently enjoy will continue. Staff members are continuing to work hard, and sometimes one employee does the work of two people if necessary, he said.
The 1,200-acre site on the edge of Hartwell Lake east of Toccoa near the Georgia/South Carolina state line is slated to have up to 900 homes when completed. It features an 18-hole Jim Fazio golf course.
Whitley hopes to come out of bankruptcy in 90 days.
