SENECA, SC - The Golden Corner Lakes Power Squadron will offer Boat Smart courses on October 4, 11, 18, and 25. Testing will be November 1. This course covers a wide variety of topics, starting with a discussion of different types of boats, hull variations and power plant choices. It covers boat handling topics such as cruise planning, fueling, docking, trailering, knots and anchoring. There is an extensive section on the required safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, electronic aids, and navigation aids. Specific requirements for operating a personal watercraft are included.
This course is presented in five two-hour evening sessions plus a final exam. Successful completion offers several benefits: It qualifies you for licensing in those states requiring it (including a license required in SC for those under 16 to drive a PWC), and may qualify you for a discount on your boat insurance premium. In addition, it makes you eligible to join the Power Squadron. Instruction is free, but there is a nominal charge for the Boat Smart manual and expenses. Classes will be from 7-9 p.m. at Oconee Memorial Hospital in the Oconee Room, next to the cafeteria. The hospital is located at 298 Memorial Drive.
