About Birchwood
We take our regional history and folklife instruction into the public schools and universities, and work with their faculties on environmental and oral history projects. We are involved with conservation organizations and causes and serve on several boards working for woodland, clean water and architectural preservation. A current major project is a documentary film on development-threatened Eastatoee Valley, one of the Appalachian region's natural and cultural treasures.
Birchwood Center for Arts and Folklife is a 501 (c) 3, non-profit, tax-exempt organization operated by Birchwood, Inc. Founded in 2000 by four elders in the arts and education, and overseen by a 13-member board of regional cultural and civic leaders, the center is maintained by private donor funding, with help from Pickens County, the South Carolina Humanities Council and the South Carolina Arts Commission.
