PICKENS, SC - Rev. Carl W. Jordan was buried June 9 in Smith Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Jordan, 69, of Pickens, died Friday, July 6, while helping his great-granddaughter to shore. The six-year-old, who reportedly did not know how to swim and was not wearing a life jacket, fell overboard while fishing.
Born in Aiken County, a son of the late Luther Brunson and Fannie Mae Gregory Jordan, Rev. Jordan received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Furman University and was currently pastor of Calumet Baptist Church in Liberty. He had previously served as associate pastor of Eastland Baptist Church in Greenville, pastor of Smith Grove Baptist Church in Liberty, Riverview Baptist Church in Powdersville, and Beaver Hills Baptist Church in Roebuck. Rev. Jordan had previously served as chaplin of the Spartanburg County Sheriff's Department and was presently chaplin of the Pickens County Sheriff's Department.
Surviving are his wife, Iris Anderson Jordan of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Sue G. Jordan of Seneca, and Steven Laverne and Angela T. Jordan of Raleigh, NC; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia J. and Thomas Gerald Wise of Easley; three brothers, Luther Gerald Jordan of Aiken and Richard Edgar Jordan of Swansea and Bruce Jordan of Newberry; three sisters, Carolyn New of Bath, and Linda Sheets of Jonesboro, IN; and Sandra Smith of Newberry; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Debt Retirement Fund of Calumet Baptist Church, 400 Peachtree Street, Liberty, SC 29657.
