The Artwork of Mary Sam Stewart
February 1 - May 1
A new temporary exhibit is currently featured at the Oconee Heritage Center through May 1. Mary Sam Messer Stewart, known to many as "Ma" Stewart, was born in South Union in 1885. She lived most of her life in Westminster and was known as a prolific painter. Creating the exhibit began with a wooden bowl painted by "Ma" Stewart. The bowl was made by the Gurney family who ran a bowl factory and a handle factory. At one time, the Gurneys worked out of the Tobacco Factory which now houses the Oconee Heritage Center. The exhibit at the OHC consists of over 40 pieces and includes pottery, a coal bucket, butter churns and even a stool all painted by this "Grandma Moses" of Westminster. For more information, call (864) 638-2224.
