Georgia DOT has suspended all construction-related lane closures on interstates and primary state routes until 10 p.m. Monday, May 28. No construction is scheduled, making it easier for holiday travelers to get to their destination.
Unscheduled lane and/or road closures may be necessary due to the wildfires in South Georgia and North Florida. Motorists traveling in the southeastern part of the state should be mindful of the reduced visibility and prepare for long delays and/or detours. Updates from the Joint Information Center will be posted on www.georgia-navigator.com throughout the holiday weekend, but for more information, call 1-866-380-9966 or see www.inciweb.org or www.gatrees.org.
Special events are listed on the attached spreadsheet. Most of these take place in downtown Atlanta, including a number of graduation ceremonies at the larger venues and the Atlanta Jazz Festival at Piedmont Park.
The Georgia State Patrol is out in force this weekend. “Click It Or Ticket” – keep those seatbelts fastened, and please drive soberly.
In the effort to lower the number of accidents and fatalities on Georgia’s roads, we want to remind holiday travelers to be safe this weekend. Whether heading for the mountains or taking off for the beach, “Be Slow – Be Cautious – Be Happy.”
If you see an accident or road hazard, dial one of the following three numbers and report it to the Transportation Management Center:
*DOT on most cell phones
Our live operators are standing by to take your call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you’re in metro Atlanta and need roadside assistance, call one of these numbers for a HERO (Highway Emergency Response Operator).
REmember to keep their vehicles tuned up with plenty of fuel. Since gas prices have hit an average of over $3 per gallon, we have noticed an uptick in “stalls” on metro Atlanta highways. While we are still collecting data to determine if there’s a correlation here, it appears that some motorists may have “sticker shock.” Running out of gas and getting stuck on the side of an interstate is a dangerous place to be. Be safe and keep some gas in your tank.
