ANDERSON, SC - Anderson County and City of Anderson are excited to announce an expansion of public transportation into the Homeland Park area. Electric City Transit expects the new routes to be in place by August 1. Riders of this system will have free transfer to the 4-U Transit System, which currently serves three counties and connects to four universities.

“I’ve been working on this for three years,” said Michael G. Thompson (pictured), chairman of Anderson County Council. “I am thrilled that the County was able work with the City to expand services to Homeland Park residents.”

City of Anderson Mayor Terence Roberts said, “Gas prices make transportation an issue for everyone. We are happy that this joint effort will bring new service to an area just outside of the City limits.

“This will provide safe and reliable transportation for area residents,” Gracie Floyd, Anderson County Councilwoman said. “The additional routes will help people take care of everyday activities like shopping and doctor’s appointments.”

“These expanded routes are also going to open up education and work opportunities for residents,” Joey Preston, Anderson County Administrator said. “We will see a strong economic impact and an improvement in residents’ quality of life as they utilize the new service.”

This week, the Federal Transit Authority approved expanding the scope of a grant awarded Anderson County for public transit. The annual cost of the system expansion will be about $95,000. Anderson County partnered with Clemson Area Transit to begin the 4-U system that originally provided residents in two counties access to four universities and many other places in 2002.

Electric City Transit estimates serving 230,000 riders this year. This is about a 23% increase in ridership from 2007. Clemson Area Transit served 1.7 million passengers in three counties during the past 12 months, and anticipates 2 million riders for 2008.
