ANDERSON, SC - Andersonville Island in Lake Hartwell has been burning since Sunday, June 15, 2008. South Carolina forestry officials are unable to extinguish the fire, so they are allowing it to burn itself out. They are helping by igniting brush. The cause is unknown.
It was approximately a year ago that a portion of Shaw Island (pictured), a 325-acre island near Double Springs boat ramp, partially burned.
Andersonville Island, a two-mile long island located at the fork of the Seneca and Tugaloo rivers, is all that remains of Andersonville, a former textile community, according to Wikipedia.
