ELBERT COUNTY, GA - The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF2 tornado caused two miles of damage through Bobby Brown State Park on Clarks Hill Lake in Elbert County on Saturday, March 15. Two houses reported roof damage, three boat docks were destroyed and many trees snapped or uprooted. The tornado's path was seven miles and 100 yards wide.
Located where the old town of Petersburg once thrived during the 1790s, the 70,000-acre park is named in memory of Lt. Robert T. Brown, U.S. Navy, who died in World War II. Petersburg was situated where the Broad and Savannah rivers flow into the Clarks Hill Reservoir, now a state recreational area. When water levels are low, visitors can see some foundations of the old town. The park's location, on the largest man-made lake east of the Mississippi River, provides boating, skiing and fishing. Yurts, which are like tents made of canvas and wood, are used for camping.
