Earlier this year, I had a nice dip in the ocean off a foreign shore before dining on fritters and drinking something with an umbrella in it. But I can't say I had a less wonderful experience water-skiing on the waters of Lake Hartwell before eating a rib-busting barbecue and drinking something out of a keg. The Bahamian outing cost me thousands of dollars. But the Lake Hartwell trip cost me less than $100. And the enjoyment was equal.
Volunteers sought for Hartwell Lake cleanup
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Project Office announced the 29th annual Hartwell Lake Cleanup Campaign is set to begin Aug. 14 and conclude Sept. 26 on National Public Lands Day.

Savannah River Basin could be option for Atlanta
Such a transfer is also feasible from an engineering standpoint, he said. A pumping station at Lake Hartwell, for example, could move water to the Chattahoochee River near Clarksville, which flows all the way into Atlanta.

Lake Hartwell study begins
The study, called the Lake Hartwell Impact Analysis, is the result of the cooperative efforts of the six South Carolina and Georgia counties bordering Hartwell Lake and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District.
Hartwell is just one of competing interests
Recently Col. Edward Kertis Jr., commander of the Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District said that the Corps, which manages the lake and Savannah River system, must follow a number of federal laws and directives. It cannot make policy based on the needs of a specific lake or organization.
