Regional Water Resource Forum 1/21/2010

(Published Jan 17, 2010)

Dear LHA Members,

The South Carolina (SC) Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) and SC Department of Natural Resources (DNR) are co-sponsoring a regional water resources conference:

  • What:  Savannah River Basin (SRB) Regional Water Resource Forum
  • When:  1:00-4:00 p.m. , Thursday, 21 January 2010
  • Where:  Palmetto Terrace Ballroom, 100 Georgia Avenue, North Augusta, SC 29841 .

The public Forum is intended to have all SRB residents, business people, municipal representatives and other water users in the basin - commonly called stakeholders – meet together with SC water organization representatives. The objective is to openly discuss and provide comments and recommendations regarding issues with current and future basin management and plans.

LHA is very pleased the State of South Carolina has decided to hold this “Forum”. We have been at the forefront of working with legislators and other South Carolina agencies to establish a “Basin Advisory Council” for over 6 years. Our involvement with Representative Don Bowen (SC District 8, Anderson) and Senator Kevin Brant (SC District 3, Anderson) has resulted in the introduction of House Bill H3121 and Senate Bill S358, both called “The South Carolina Comprehensive Water Planning Act”. Both bills call for revising water management practices in South Carolina and establishing Regional Basin Advisory Councils (RBAC). These RBACs will also allow us to have equal representation with our Georgia neighbors who established an RBAC in 2008 with the approval of their new water plan in January 2008.

The best way to get to the meeting is to drive to Augusta , GA , and cross the river via 13th Street which becomes Georgia Ave in North Augusta , SC. The Center is just across the river a couple of blocks.

We hope you can attend if your schedule permits. LHA will have a number of representatives present and will provide a report of the proceedings to those who cannot be there.

Please do not hesitate to call us on 864-222-1925 if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Herb Burnham                                    Mike Massey
