LHA Meeting TONIGHT 10/23/2008

(Published Oct 23, 2008)

As you have read in the LHA newsletter, a plan has been in the works to reduce flows downstream in the winter months to try to conserve more water in the lakes. LHA proposed this action in late 2007, hoping that some relief could occur as early as last winter.

We are pleased to report that both states have recommended to the Corps that water releases be reduced from 3600CFS to 3100CFS through the end of February. The Corps has completed their Environmental Assessment, and has begun an accelerated public comment period. The intent is to implement the new flow plan by November 1st.

This plan will clearly not solve our low water levels, but should buy some additional time until, hopefully, rainfall returns to more normal amounts.

Please plan to attend the LHA Fall Meeting this week to hear more about this and other efforts to address drought impacts.  Our guest speakers will be Savannah District Commander Col. Ed Kertis and Jeff Larson, GA EPD.
