A letter to LHA Members:
The Corps of Engineers has finally commenced the proposed Savannah Basin flow reduction from 3600CFS down to 3100CFS. It will take a couple weeks to get down to the new target flow. This effort took a couple months longer than it should have because the states failed to develop the plan and get it through the stakeholder group in a timely fashion; and several federal agencies were slow in responding to the public notice.
The flow reduction could possibly only extend through January or into February. This is far too little time to do much good considering the late start date. Our next efforts will be to seek extension of the flow reduction for as long as possible. The plan calls for extensive monitoring for adverse impacts, and it would be reasonable to expect that lower flows can be maintained until problems are detected.
LHA will be developing a strategy to lobby our state and federal representatives and regulators to help protect our lakes and extend the reduced flow period. We will be asking our members to participate in this effort, and will provide more details in the coming weeks.
