A 75-acre village center will include upscale coffee houses, fresh-food markets, art galleries, adventure outfitters and locally owned restaurants, Vick said. A “boutique” hotel will host business conferences and adventure vacationers who want to enjoy area activities from hiking to whitewater rafting.
The development is centered on a love of the outdoors and its cornerstone will be a new dream home for the Foothills Area Family YMCA.

Earlier this year, I had a nice dip in the ocean off a foreign shore before dining on fritters and drinking something with an umbrella in it. But I can't say I had a less wonderful experience water-skiing on the waters of Lake Hartwell before eating a rib-busting barbecue and drinking something out of a keg. The Bahamian outing cost me thousands of dollars. But the Lake Hartwell trip cost me less than $100. And the enjoyment was equal.

Volunteers sought for Hartwell Lake cleanup
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Project Office announced the 29th annual Hartwell Lake Cleanup Campaign is set to begin Aug. 14 and conclude Sept. 26 on National Public Lands Day.

COE primitive weapon deer hunts
The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ J. Strom Thurmond Project Office will conduct primitive weapon deer hunts in Bussey Point, located in Lincoln Co., Ga., in order to maintain the deer population within the carrying capacity for the area and to improve the quality of the herd. The 2,545-acre peninsula will be open for scheduled hunts on these dates:

Park rangers and a fisheries biologist report that several dead striped bass have been found above and below the J. Strom Thurmond Dam near Augusta, Ga., in the past seven days.

The nearly 12,000 shoreline permit holders on Hartwell are being asked to voluntarily provide e-mail addresses so they can be receive information and updates about shoreline use permits electronically.
Contractor selected for Franklin County boat ramp
In 2007, the county received some $900,000 from the Lake Hartwell PCB settlement and has already spent part of that money to put in the concrete ramp. However, the rest of the project, including parking, has yet to be completed.
