Shoreline Project Needs VolunteersThe S.C. Department of Natural Resources and its partner organizations were recently awarded a $34,476 grant to enhance fish habitat on two Savannah River reservoirs. The Bass Anglers Sportsman’s Society and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation grant supports efforts to establish shoreline vegetation on Lakes Hartwell and Russell to improve fish habitat.

Drought DowngradedLake levels in Hartwell, Russell, and Thurmond have returned to near normal according to the U.S Army Corps of Engineers, but without normal rainfall may be at Stage 1 in 14 days. According to Duke Energy lake management manager George Galleher, “We had above average rainfall in November and December, but January saw below average rainfall and as of Feb. 17 we are below average. Duke Energy continues to think of the Keowee-Toxaway Area as being in a drought.”

Nearly 300 people attended two public meetings held by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in December on the upper Savannah River where they learned about the professional management of the reservoirs controlled by the Savannah District.

Shoreline Management PlanImplementation of the Hartwell Project Shoreline Management Plan began the week of January 30, 2007, and can be viewed on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
website. Objectives of the plan are to achieve a balance between public and permitted private use, while assuring long-term resource protection. The 44-page plan expands on topics such as shoreline use, docks, facilities and erosion control.

Shelter ReservationsOfficials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that Corps managed picnic shelters and day use areas at Hartwell Lake may be reserved beginning March 1. Picnic shelters and day use areas will open April 1 and are ideal places to hold family reunions, church outings, company picnics, meetings and other group outings.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers day use areas are now available! The passes are $30 each and are valid for one year from the date of purchase. The pass allows unlimited nationwide use of all day use fee areas managed by the Corps. Passes may be purchased in person at the Hartwell Lake Office (using cash, check or credit card, by phone (using credit card) toll-free at 888-893-0678, or by mail (using check or credit card). Annual passes are also available at the Russell Lake and Thurmond Lake Offices.

Lake Water LevelsThe Georgia House of Representatives unanimously passed a
resolution proposed by Rep. John Heard, R-Lawrenceville, on Friday, Feb. 9. The resolution urges the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Congress to begin a study of the costs and effects of adding to the storage capacities of all Corps reservoirs located throughout the State of Georgia.

Rowing DockThe Corps of Engineers has approved a permit for the rowing dock at City of Anderson-owned Darwin Wright Park on Lake Hartwell. The dock could be installed by late summer if grants the City of Anderson Recreation Department is seeking are approved. The CVB will market the dock to colleges in the Northeast and Midwest for spring training. Each rowing team that trains at the dock would generate $30,000 in economic impact for Anderson County, according to the Anderson County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Corps Bans Tube Kiting on Lake HartwellThe U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has banned the use of tube kites on the three lakes under its jurisdiction in Georgia and South Carolina. Tube kites are immediately prohibited on Lakes Hartwell, J. Strom Thurmond and Richard B. Russell under authority of U.S. Code, Title 36, Chapter III, Part 327, Section 327.12(a) Restrictions.
