COE Opening Hunting Areas

SAVANNAH, GA. -- The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers will open some of its larger recreational areas on Hartwell Lake to archery hunters and small game hunting during the regular 2008-2009 state hunting season.

These areas include:
South Carolina River, Anderson Co., SC (250 acres)
Glenn Ferry Park, Anderson Co., SC (211 acres)
Weldon Island Park, Anderson Co., SC (138 acres)
Choestoea Park, Oconee Co., SC (369 acres)
Paynes Creek Park, Hart Co., Ga. (399 acres)
Hartwell Dam, Quarry Area, Hart Co., Ga. (400 acres)

A permit is required for the Hartwell Dam Quarry Area and the South Carolina River Area only and is available at no cost from the Hartwell Lake Project Office beginning in August. These areas are restricted to archery equipment only. All hunting regulations, license requirements, and seasons set by the Georgia and SC Departments of Natural Resources apply. Small game hunting is allowed only at the Hartwell Dam Quarry Area and the South Carolina River Hunting Area. Small game hunting is allowed only when deer or turkey season is closed. Hunting for small game is restricted to shotgun only with number 4 shot or smaller. Hunting for small game is prohibited in Glenn Ferry Park, Choestoea Park, Paynes Creek Park, and Weldon Island Park. Hunting for deer and turkey is restricted to archery equipment only. All firearms are prohibited. The areas will be open on a walk-in or boat-in only basis. No motorized vehicles will be allowed within the gated areas. Only portable stands/blinds are acceptable and must be removed from public land after use.

Dove hunting is allowed in designated fields at the Hartwell Dam Quarry Hunting Area. Dove hunting is allowed Saturday and Wednesday only throughout the season as set by the Georgia DNR.

Remaining public lands and waters around Hartwell Lake are open to hunting in accordance with Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations and Georgia and South Carolina hunting regulations. The islands in Hartwell Lake are open for hunting in accordance with state hunting regulations and seasons. However, in the interest of safety, big game hunters are encouraged to use archery equipment while hunting on the islands.
