The annual pass costs $30. The new passes are valid 12 months from date of purchase and can be obtained at Hartwell Lake Visitor Center, 5625 Anderson Highway, Hartwell, Ga.

Corps to conduct Hartwell gate test

The COE Savannah District will conduct a required safety test on the spillway gates of Hartwell Dam after the Fishing Pier dedication ceremony. The test will ensure the gates work properly and can be activated in the event of an emergency to protect the dam and people and property downstream. The test is required annually as part of the Corps of Engineers Dam Safety Program but has been postponed due to drought. The last such test was conducted in 2007. During the test all 12 spillway gates will be opened.

Christmas tree recycling drop-off at Hartwell Lake

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office will accept Christmas trees for recycling Dec. 26 through Feb. 15, 2010. The recycled trees will be used as fish attractors in Hartwell Lake. Trees will be tied in bundles, weighted with concrete anchors, and submerged in various locations marked with fish attractor buoys.

Coneross boat ramp closes temporarily

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office will temporarily close the Coneross boat ramp in Oconee Co., S.C. beginning Monday, Dec. 21 for repaving of the park. Work is scheduled to be completed, weather permitting, and the park reopened in about three weeks.

New fishing pier to re-open below Hartwell Dam

Billy Birdwell, a spokesman for the Savannah District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, said the existing pier was closed after September 11, 2001 because vehicular access was too close to the powerhouse of the dam. That vehicular access has become employee parking.

Dock installation deadline for Hartwell Lake quickly approaching

“We extended the deadline to have docks installed during the recent drought, but with the reservoir full now, residents have only until New Years Day to finish installing their docks,” said Sandy Campbell, Hartwell Lake chief ranger.

Corps revises Thurmond level

Largemouth Bass: Fair. Guide Brad Fowler reports that bait has made its way back into the creeks and the bass are right behind them. Especially later in the afternoon he has found fish chasing bait; creek fishing should be good until temperatures get very cold.

Rains caused Lake Hartwell to rise above 660 ft-msl on Nov. 12, or two feet above the desired level for that date. It is expected to rise to approximately 662 ft-msl where it will remain for two or more weeks until Thurmond’s level has declined enough to accept more water. Hartwell Lake was last above 660 ft-msl on Sept. 7, 2005.

Dock owners on Lakes Thurmond and Hartwell should be prepared to move their docks quickly to avoid damage due to high water.

COE waives day-use fees Veterans Day through weekend

Day-use fees will be waived for veterans, active and reserve service members and their families at two of its lakes on the upper Savannah River, the J. Strom Thurmond and Hartwell Dam and Lake on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 through Nov. 15.

COE to reduce Savannah River flow for 7 day test. CANCELLED

The test is needed to determine the movement of salinity and chlorides in the Savannah River’s estuary as they go up the river from the ocean in high tides. The test is part of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project’s (SHEP) environmental studies. The COE is researching a proposal to deepen the harbor by as much as an additional six feet.

Repair work to lower Thurmond, raise Hartwell

Thurmond will be kept no higher than 326 throughout the 2 year work period, Lowering to that level will begin next week.Although the pool level will be kept lower during the summer recreation season, the corps plans to store additional water in Lake Hartwell (upstream from Russell) to provide safeguards against the impacts of any dry spells that could push Thurmond Lake lower than desired.

The Savannah District of the Army Corps of Engineers proposes to make a temporary revision to the 1989 Savannah River Basin Drought Contingency Plan and is soliciting comments from the public on the change.

Property owners who have not yet installed their “ghost” docks fall under this installation deadline. The term “ghost dock” refers to dock permits which were issued under previous Shoreline Management Plans (SMP’s) which did not require docks to be installed.
