Two anderson teenagers were recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary on Saturday, April 28, for helping two men whose boat had capsized on Lake Hartwell at Darwin Wright Park.
The Auxiliary's Flotilla 2-5, Division 7, presented certificates and gift cards to Matthew Garvin, 15, and Matthew Moore, 16, during the flotilla's monthly meeting at the Army Corps of Engineers Office and Visitors Center on Highway 29.
Garvin and Moore helped a 77-year-old man and his grandson to shore and helped salvage their boat after it sank near the boat ramp in Darwin Wright Park on March 12.
The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary was established on June 23, 1939 by an act of Congress as the United States Coast Guard Reserve and re-designated as the Auxiliary on February 19, 1941. It is a volunteer uniformed component of the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and works with the rest of the Coast Guard in all of its varied missions with the exception that Auxiliary Members (Auxiliarists) may support the military and law enforcement mission of the Coast Guard but do not directly participate in it. As of February 11, 2007 there were 28,142 active Auxiliarists nationwide.
Flotilla 2-5, has 30+ members from both Georgia and South Carolina that have for years been active in providing public educational programs, vessel safety checks, and assisting the U.S. Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as safety patrols, search and rescue, and marine environmental protection.
