Sixty years ago, the late Atlanta Mayor William Hartsfield resisted helping to pay for Lake Lanier, a new federal reservoir being built north of town. Atlanta had plenty of water, he wrote Congress. Thanks, but no thanks.

Anticipating more than 10,000 visitors each year, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Division opened a new fishing pier below the Hartwell Dam on Jan. 15, giving anglers greater access to fishing areas adjacent to the facility on the Georgia side of the Savannah River.

The annual pass costs $30. The new passes are valid 12 months from date of purchase and can be obtained at Hartwell Lake Visitor Center, 5625 Anderson Highway, Hartwell, Ga.

Corps to conduct Hartwell gate test

The COE Savannah District will conduct a required safety test on the spillway gates of Hartwell Dam after the Fishing Pier dedication ceremony. The test will ensure the gates work properly and can be activated in the event of an emergency to protect the dam and people and property downstream. The test is required annually as part of the Corps of Engineers Dam Safety Program but has been postponed due to drought. The last such test was conducted in 2007. During the test all 12 spillway gates will be opened.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources will open and dedicate a new fishing pier below the Hartwell Dam at 10 a.m. on Jan. 15, giving anglers greater access to fishing areas adjacent to the facility on the Georgia side of the Savannah River. The dedication ceremony will take place at the Georgia River Recreation area off of U.S. Highway 29 just below Hartwell Dam in Hart County, Ga.

Christmas tree recycling drop-off at Hartwell Lake

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office will accept Christmas trees for recycling Dec. 26 through Feb. 15, 2010. The recycled trees will be used as fish attractors in Hartwell Lake. Trees will be tied in bundles, weighted with concrete anchors, and submerged in various locations marked with fish attractor buoys.
