The Southern Fishing Report 10/10/2008

Bass are hitting top water baits as they chase bait fish to the surface. X-Raps and Crank baits are also working, but lake levels will continue to drop off and boating across this lake will get worse. Lake levels continue to drop and clubs are finding it hard to find ramps that are open. Some good rain fell last Wednesday and Thursday, but not enough to make any major difference. If you can still put in at Portman Marine, you will find pretty good fishing. Now might be a good time to do some maintenance on your boat and fishing tackle.

Despite a persistent rumor, neither the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) nor any other state agency will compensate motorists for injuries or damages resulting from deer collisions. Besides practicing safe and defensive driving techniques, each motorist should carry adequate collision and comprehensive insurance

Imagine a place, once the capital of a nation, but now home to a pristine mountain lake… where Native Americans once hunted and traded near lush forest streams and allies fought wars against foreign nations for control of land and people.

The Corps began waiving recreation fees for service members on leave, or "rest and recuperation" from duty in Iraq in 2003. The current announcement expands the waiver to cover DoD civilians and active-duty servicemembers on leave or returning from all deployments in support of the Global War on Terror, to include Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and other GWOT deployments.
alt="Southern Fishing" border="0" align="left" hspace="15" />

BREAKING NEWS ON LAKE HARTWELL!!! On October 1, 2008, the Army Corps of Engineers has plans to start dropping the water levels in Lake Hartwell at the rate of one foot per week. The water will then be diverted down the Savannah River to Lake Thurmond (Clarks Hill). Lake levels on the "Hill" are extremely low and Hartwell has the water to compensate for this according to local news.

The Southern Fishing Report 9/27/2008

       alt="Southern Fishing" border="0" align="left" hspace="15" />

Bass fishing was slow last week and the transition into Fall didn't help matters much either. Anglers had a tough time and not many quality Bass showed up at the scales. Main lake points seemed to be the favorite among the anglers I saw on the lake. Carolina Rigs with a variety of plastics attached to them are the favorites, but other baits are also working. Chug Bugs around the docks, especially those in the creeks or near the points are catching some keeper fish. Small schools of shad are still popping up from time to time, so have that top water bait ready at all times. Also, have a small jig or Texas Rigged Worm ready and fish all the submerged cover you can find. Shady rock ledges are still my favorite until the water temperatures cool down a little bit more.

       alt="LHA Logo" border="0" align="left" hspace="15" />

"Our lake level is fast approaching 15 feet below full pool. Once this level is reached, flows from Hartwell will increase significantly. At this level, Thurmond has only 5 feet of conservation pool remaining while Hartwell has 20 feet; thus Hartwell draw will become 4 to 1 vs. Thurmond, so both lakes reach the bottom of their conservation pools at the same time." The full (Fall 2008) LHA newsletter can be downloaded by clicking HERE

Bass fishing has been tough and the full moon usually makes day fishing a challenge. This did not turn the bass on like many anglers had hoped for. Most anglers had to struggle for the few bites they did get. A lot of single, small bass were showing up at weigh in.

We went to the Keowee River that feeds into Lake Hartwell. This is about 20-25 minutes from our home in Piedmont, SC. Near the Seneca/Clemson area. We put in at Lawrence Bridge ramp (which was actually closed for boats) (and difficult for kayaks!).We put in at about 2:30 in the afternoon and were tying the kayak back up at about 8:00pm...a long but awesome day!

Lake Hartwell: Striped and Hybrid Bass: Good. Fish the area from Singing Pines to the dam in 70 to 90 feet of water. Down lines with herring, downriggers, and lead core lines are all effective ways to get down to the fish.
