Learn-to-Sail Camp for Children

Published Jun 1, 2007

Junior Sailing Camp is an annual, summer, day camp opportunity for local children. Sailing clubs across America offer certified Learn-to-Sail camps so youngsters can benefit from qualified sailing instructors. The instructors devote much of their summer teaching kids the wholesome activity of sailing real boats.

Western Carolina Sailing Club, a nonprofit group of recreational sailing families, located on Hartwell Lake, offers a sanctioned, Junior Sailing Camp each summer which is taught by certified sailing instructors to kids 8-18. The club supplies small centerboard sailboats for the children’s use. The camp takes place on two consecutive weekends in July. This year the camp will be held July 7th & 8th and 14th & 15th. WCSC has all the requirements and equipment to conduct this refreshing and healthy summer activity which they have been doing for years, under the direction of US Sailing, the national authority for sailing in the US. A trained nurse is always on duty.

Learn-to-Sail is a day camp which includes supervised water activity, instruction book, a centerboard sailboat, the company of children with similar interests and lunch each day which is included in the cost of the camp.. The cost of the camp is $175 plus the $10 price of the book. The only item the child brings is a US Coast Guard certified lifejacket which fits properly.

Western Carolina Sailing Club is located on a cove along Hartwell Lake which docks and moors over 300 sailboats. It lays off SC 187 south of Anderson at 5200 Westwind Way. The club offers camping areas for families wishing to camp during the two weekends their child's camp is in session. Reservations must be made prior to camping. In addition there are docks with swim ladders, parking for cars and facilities for the handicapped. The WCSC grounds cover over 30 acres with green lawns and a mammoth clubhouse containing hot showers, air conditioned bathrooms, kitchen/dining area and porch with rocking chairs overlooking the lake -- yacht club atmosphere.
