4-H2O Poontoon Classroom in July

Published Jun 22, 2007

ANDERSON, SC - The Anderson County 4-H2O Pontoon Classroom will be on Lake Secession Boy Scout Point in July. 4-H20 is a week-long, outdoor, hands-on science laboratory for kids age 10-13. It is held on many lakes throughout the state of South Carolina, including Lakes Hartwell and Secession.

The Lake Secession classroom will be from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., July 10-13. Participants must know how to swim. Lake Secession serves as the classroom. Pontoon boats allow campers to leave the shore.

This water program allows youth to collect water samples, observe microscopic and macroscopic life, conduct water quality experiments, and explore tributary streams. Not only do the participants learn about enhancing and preserving the intricacies of the aquatic ecosystem, they also learn about the basic techniques of fishing, bait-crafting, and orienteering. While some of the activities take place on land, a large percentage of the events take place on pontoon boats. By integrating classroom teaching methods with hands-on activities, 4-H20 Pontoon Classroom has successfully educated numerous youth in the Upstate.

Cost is $60 per participant and includes a notebook, t-shirt, materials and snacks. Pre-payment required. Class size is limited to the first 18 participants to pay. Make checks payable to Clemson University, 313 S. Towers St., Anderson, SC, 29624. For more information call Jessica Davis at 226-1581, ext. 111.
