Polar Bear PlungeThe 11th Annual Polar Bear Plunge, benefitting Heart Haven, a shelter for victims of domestic violence in Elbert, Franklin and Hart counties, sponsored by the Northeast Georgia Council on Domestic Violence, will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 24, at Hart State Park in Hartwell, GA. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The Parade of Plungers and a costume contest is at 12:30 p.m. The plunge begins at 1 p.m. The cost to plunge is a $125 donation to the cause. Early registration forms are available at area merchants and should be turned in by Feb. 19.

The Polar Bear Jump is a one-day event to raise funds for children and adults with disabilities in Anderson and Oconee counties, as well as attract hundreds of spectators who come out in support of the brave jumpers and to enjoy the carnival atmosphere.

Register at Sheppard Swim Center in Anderson by paying the pool fee of $40 per person for city residents or $45 for noncity residents.
If lifeguarding is in your future, sign up for Red Cross Lifeguard Training beginning February 19 for good swimmers ages 15 and up. The Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) course begins February 19 for good swimmers ages 16 and up. Registration fees for these instruction courses are $95 for city residents and $100 for non-city residents.

Great Backyard Bird CountThe tenth annual Great Backyard Bird Count is coming up February 16-19, and South Carolina bird watchers have a chance to help make history. WCSC Annual Chili Cook OffThe
Western Carolina Sailing Club (WCSC) will host the 23rd Annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday, Feb. 3, at 5:30 at the clubhouse on Lake Hartwell. Any regular WCSC member can enter their best chili for everyone to savor by bringing his or her chili to the clubhouse around 5 p.m. This event has been going on at WCSC for years. Most of the time, the winner has been a new member. There is also a judging for the best desert.

Lake Keowee to host BFL Savannah River Division tournamentThe Savannah River Division of the $8.8 million Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League will visit Lake Keowee in Seneca, S.C., Feb. 3 for the first of five regular-season events. Savannah River Division anglers will visit Clarks Hill Lake in Appling, Ga., March 31 for their second regular-season event, followed by an event on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C., April 28.

Reservations Now Being Accepted for Boating ClassesThe Georgia Department of Natural Resources will be offering five boating classes on the following dates: Feb. 17, Mar. 31, Apr. 28, May 12 and June 23.
